Authenticity Associates is a holistic coaching and counseling practice based in San Diego California. Holistic counseling offers a unique and powerful alternative to traditional talk therapy. Talking about and analyzing issues can lead to insight, yet not necessarily lead to transformation and healing. Advances in neuroscience have shown the importance of the mind body connection to resolving issues at the deepest level. Holistic counseling engages your mind, body and spirit to transform unwanted habits, decrease stress, anxiety and depression, heal trauma, rewire your brain for happiness, deepen your spiritual connection, manifest your goals, create loving relationships and live fully in the present.
Mind Body Approach for Deep Healing
Holistic approaches are especially important to healing from highly stressful or traumatic events. When trauma occurs, it overwhelms the system and we are not able to process everything that happened. It leaves behind a host of mental, emotional and physical residue in the form of anxiety, depression, insomnia, irritability, unhealthy habits and more that can linger for weeks, months or years to come. Highly stressful experiences cause our nervous system to kick into high gear and our survival instincts take over. Our rational brain is literally hijacked by our primitive brain that takes charge to survive the situation.

Traditional talk therapies work from a top-down model where thoughts are used to change feelings, behaviors and experiences. This model relies on the upper part of the brain, to manage and alter the inner and more primitive parts. As a result, the success of a top-down approach is contingent upon a client's ability to analyze, narrate and verbally process their thoughts and feelings. This type of analysis is not often possible with intense stress and trauma. Mind-body therapies such as brainspotting, somatic therapy, hypnosis and EMDR follow the bottom-up model where the inner brain sends information and experiences up through the limbic system for release and into the neocortex for processing. Mind-body approaches engage our innate drive to release sensory, residue or unresolved experiences and open us up to new insights, equilibrium, regulation and improved overall health.
